Inlay/Onlay/Overlay
When a tooth is decayed, instead of making a conventional repair using composite resin, it is preferable to make a dental prosthesis, in particular an inlay, onlay or overlay. These dental inlays enable the tooth to be restored to full function while maintaining an aesthetic appearance. They are also more waterproof and last longer.
What is an Inlay/Onlay/Overlay?
Inlays/Onlays/Overlays are ceramic (or composite resin) prostheses bonded to the tooth surface. The main difference between the three lies in where the restoration is placed. If the decay is on the inside of the tooth, an inlay is placed, but if the destruction is on one or two cusps, an onlay is chosen, and if the destruction is very extensive, an overlay is indicated. Overlays completely cover the surface of the tooth and are an advantageous replacement for inlays. dental crowns.
Overlay Vs Crowns
Our dentist can choose an overlay to preserve the remaining tooth structure. A crown, on the other hand, requires a more mutilating and aggressive preparation of the tooth structure. An overlay restoration will therefore be less aggressive than a crown.
Inlay/Onlay/Overlay Vs Composite
A composite filling is considered a "direct" filling because it can be applied in a single visit directly by our dentist in our dental clinic. Inlays, onlays and overlays are considered "indirect" fillings because, like crowns, they are made in a laboratory. This means that a patient will need at least two visits: one visit to clean the cavity and take an impression, and a second visit to bond the inlay/onlay/overlay.
The choice between direct or indirect filling is made by our dentist. In general, if the destruction is greater than 40%, our dentist will opt for the indirect method.
